We have an excellent education programme at Rhydymwyn which has been established approximately 3 years and is aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. The programme explores the historical interest and wildlife value of the reserve. Schools can visit free of charge and choose which activities they would like to do to create a learning experience suited to their particular needs. We also offer a subsidy of up to £100 to help towards the cost of transport to the reserve.
Click on the education programme for further details on our activities and for a booking form.
We can also organise practical activities for Key Stage 3 and 4 students that would like an outdoor learning experience.
For further information regarding our programme please contact Cat Lucas on 01352 742 115 or email cweo@newwildlife.org.uk
Pond Dipping – children will be introduced to the pond habitat and taught how to use the equipment with a demonstration of safe pond dipping. Children will then have a go at pond dipping and learn how to identify pond animals. They will be encouraged to ask questions and describe what they can see.
Food chain Game – children will take part in a practical session to learn about food chains and the feeding relationships between different plants and animals within two different ecosystems; a woodland ecosystem and a wetland ecosystem.
Wildlife Walk – children will be taken on a guided walk through the valley. They will focus on identifying birds and bird boxes, wild flowers, trees, butterflies, reptiles and mammals and their tracks and signs. These walks can be tailored to suit the requirements of the group and can be general or specific. Depending on the time of year they will learn about the characteristics of a particular season.
Mother Nature Designer – Pupils will be encouraged to collect natural materials from the reserve to create a piece of art work. Children will be taken on a guided walk and be given a pouch to collect materials such as leaves, twigs, petal etc. Children will then find a space outside (or in the Field Studies Centre if the weather is poor) and will be asked to use their imaginative and observational skills to create pictures, shapes and / or patterns.
Life in World War ll – The site has string associations with World War ll. Children will learn what home life was like in World War ll and about rationing by playing a game. They will complete personal identification cards and write evacuation letters. They will learn about and practice what people had to do in the event of an air raid. They will see examples of World War ll artefacts and be able to compare life then with life now.
Rhydymwyn Valley Life Story – In this activity, children will be split into three groups and through games and role play will re-enact in broad outline the history and development of the Rhydymwyn Valley. Each group will focus on a particular period:
The emphasis will be on the change from people living in a natural environment to the impact of industry and war on the Valley and back to its natural state today. The session ends with a quiz to reinforce what they have learnt.
Historical Detective – as an introduction children will be told what the Valley was used for in the past i.e. lead mining and the production of weapons in World War ll. Using this knowledge children ill then go on a guided walk of the site and complete a questionnaire about what the Valley was used for in the past by observing significant landmarks.
