North East Wales Wildlife (NEWW) owns and/or manages under licence a number of wildlife reserves. These are generally areas that have been set aside as mitigation for Great Crested Newts as the result of development or landfill.
Their purpose is to ensure the conservation of protected environments and species.
NEWW started in 1986 as Deeside Urban Wildlife Group (DUWG) an action group to protect a local pool, meadow and woodland area. It entered into an agreement with Flintshire County Council to take over and manage land in Connah’s Quay, which was set up to ensure the protection of the Great Crested Newt population as a result of increasing housing development.
Also in 1997 as a result of landfill operations in Brookhill, Buckley, the group was asked to take on the management of the mitigation site of 20 pools provided off Liverpool Road to ensure the conservation of the Great Crested Newts displaced from Brookhill.
Over the years NEWW has built up expertise in amphibian conservation and the management of mitigation sites.
NEWW does not seek to purchase wildlife sites. In general NEWW is asked to manage or take on ownership of development mitigation sites with the provision of appropriate funding and works closely with different partners in pursuit of its aims.
These partners include the following:
- Flintshire County Council
- Countryside Council for Wales.
- The Forestry Commission
- DEFRA
- AD Waste Ltd
- Mersey Waste Holdings
- Local Community Groups e.g. Friends of Rhydymwyn Valley, Cymau Quarry Conservation Group
