Broadoak / Llwyni covers an area of about 44 hectares adjacent and to the south west of Connah’s Quay. The setting is significant as it comprises an area that is extensively developed but importantly retains the rural character of the countryside that was dominant prior to the housing development. Llwyni Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is the remnant of a large area of woodland, grassland and water habitats. The woodlands themselves have remnants of semi-natural ancient trees and the diversity of habitats is home to many notable species including badgers and great crested newts.

Following a Public Inquiry in 1994, land scheduled for residential development was de-allocated to support the local wildlife. The Inspector’s recommendation was to provide fields for foraging, buffer zones along woodland edges, safe corridors for the movement of wildlife and measures for protecting wildlife during development – the importance of Llwyni’s wildlife was recognised. The open space was declared Flintshire’s first Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in 2000. The following year, together with Wepre Country Park it was designated as Connah’s Quay Ponds and Woodlands Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The open space which now remains to support wildlife is managed through Llwyni Joint Consultative Board– a partnership between local authority, Town and Country Councillors, the Countryside Council for Wales, local residents, landowners, NEWW and other interested organisations. The NEWW runs events and carries out projects to engage the community in nature conservation:

The reserve is also habitat for foxes and a wide variety of birds, invertebrates and amphibians. Llwyni Local Nature Reserve has a strong sense of community involvement and identity. It is a focal point for many community conservation projects, including tree planting, pond management and art workshops. (See more Events). Many community events have been run at Llwyni LNR such as, mural painting on the garage walls, woodsculpting, tree planting during National Tree Week, Spring cleanups, Wildflower, Mammal, Amphibian and Bird surveys as well as a community barbeque in June 01, celebrating the 1st anniversary of the LNR.
